  6. OVERVIEW: FontSpec Pro is a Windows TrueType Font Manager. The application has
  7. ========  three areas of interest:
  8.                         1. View installed fonts
  9.                         2. Print font specimen sheets
  10.                         3. Install and manage fonts
  11.  
  12.           As a Viewer:
  13.           -----------
  14.           You can display your installed TrueType fonts in sizes from 8 to 98
  15.           points, using different effects and justification modes. Instead of
  16.           trying to remember what all those cryptic font names look like you
  17.           can view actual multi-line samples of the font right on your screen.
  18.  
  19.           As a Printer:
  20.           ------------
  21.           You can print pro-quality font specimen sheets of your installed
  22.           fonts using a variety of options, including single or two-column or
  23.           full sheet formats. You select what the specimen sample will say or
  24.           you can create your own sample text. You select point sizes, which
  25.           fonts to print, add time, all caps... almost anything can be
  26.           customized to your satisfaction.

  28.           As a Font Manager:
  29.           -----------------
  30.           Here's the really exciting part! If you're like most of us you have
  31.           more than likely collected a large number of fonts. Having all those
  32.           fonts installed at the same time takes up memory and slows Windows
  33.           down. FontSpec Pro gives you a way to manage those fonts in smaller
  34.           bite-size chunks we call "Font Groups." A Font Group is a collection
  35.           of fonts which you intend to use for a given purpose. For example,
  36.           you can create a group of fonts which you use for a given customer.
  37.           Or, you can create a group of your favorite fonts.
  38.  
  39.           Each Font Group is given a name (such as "My Favorite Fonts"). You
  40.           can then install and activate any Font Group you choose.
  41.  
  42.           As a bonus feature, you can also preview each font before it's ever
  43.           installed. This feature helps you decide if you really want to keep
  44.           a particular font or not. And, if you decide you don't want a font
  45.           (it doesn't matter if it's already installed or if it's not yet
  46.           installed), you can remove and delete any font you don't want.

  49. MARKETING Shareware (not freeware). Please feel free to distribute this
  50. ========= application to everyone as long as no monies are collected, except
  51.           for a small disk duplication fee if necessary. If you find this
  52.           program of value to you please don't think that the "other guy"
  53.           will send in his registration (he probably won't). As of today,
  54.           October 28th 1993, over 3500 copies of FontSpec have been
  55.           distributed and only 47 people have registered (ugh!). So, I'm

  67.           When you register FontSpec Pro you can be assured of a realistic
  68.           upgrade policy: You register just once. The registered version will
  69.           recognize new version upgrades within the same whole-number revision
  70.           (version 5.0, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 etc... to 5.9 are all treated the same).
  71.           That means you can download upgrades -=+*AT NO COST*+=- except for
  72.           line charges.

  75. SET-UP:   FontSpec Pro is self-installing. Depending on whether you have the
  76. ======    shareware version or the registered version, you do the following:
  77.  
  78.           If this is a shareware copy of FontSpec:
  79.           ---------------------------------------
  80.              .  Decompress your file (ZIP,ARC,whatever). Do not try to
  81.                 decompress any of the resulting child files. Here's an
  82.                 approximation of what you'll end up with:

  100.              .  Put all of the child files into a temporary directory
  101.                 or on a floppy diskette.
  102.              .  Start Windows. Choose "Run" from the File Menu.
  103.                 Type "A:\FS-SETUP.EXE" or you can use the path of the
  104.                 temporary directory where the files reside.
  105.  
  106.           You should obtain the file VBRUN300.DLL which is not included with
  107.           this distribution, but is required for FontSpec to run. It wasn't
  108.           included because many people already have this file on their system
  109.           so it would be a waste of time to download it again (and again and
  110.           again). I hope you can appreciate why the file wasn't included. It
  111.           may already be on your system (check your \Windows directory or your
  112.           \Windows\System directory). The file can also be obtained from most
  113.           bulletin boards, CompuServe forums or America Online.
  114.  
  115.           If you've purchased FontSpec:
  116.           ----------------------------
  117.           Installation is a snap! Start Windows. Choose "Run" from the File
  118.           Menu and type "A:\SETUP.EXE" (not FS-Setup, that's for the people
  119.           who haven't registered... yet).

  121.           Both registered and shareware versions
  122.           --------------------------------------
  123.           You can reinstall FontSpec Pro at any time by selecting the
  124.           FontSpec install icon from the FontSpec Group.

  127. GETTING   Double-click on the FontSpec Launcher icon. Each time you start the
  128. STARTED   launcher, it reminds you that you can relocate the launch pad to any
  129. =======   part of your screen by clicking (and holding down) the left mouse
  130.           button on the launch pad's BORDER and then moving to where you want
  131.           the pad to be, then release the mouse button. This is also known as
  132.           "Drag & Drop".
  133.  
  134.           The launch pad's color changes once every minute (no it's not an
  135.           offbeat clock). The color changes to help remind you that the launch
  136.           pad is active. Also, the pad does it's very best to stay on top of
  137.           whatever application you may have running. This means that you have
  138.           access to FontSpec Pro from within other Window's applications.

  140.           Let's start with the Viewer. Single-click on the pad's view button.
  141.

  143. VIEWER    The viewer starts up with a sample of one of your fonts in 60 points
  144. ======    (points are a unit of measure used by the typography industry). One
  145.           inch equals 72 points.
  146.  
  147.           The viewer makes no changes to your system, so don't be afraid to
  148.           experiment. Click on the large Setup button at the top of the form.
  149.           The font sample is replaced with a setup form. This is where you
  150.           customize the viewer to suit your needs. You can show all the way up
  151.           to 999 points if you wish by changing the maximum point size. My
  152.           personal preference is 72 points.
